Glaucoma involves damage to the nerve fibre layer of the retina that is typically caused by an elevation in the pressure inside the eye. It is one of the most common causes for irreversible visual loss and can go undetected until extreme visual loss has taken place. It is painless and asymptomatic. Fields of vision progressively decrease till only a central island is left, which if left untreated, extinguishes vision leading to blindness.
